FED: Fire destroys part of Port Augusta detention centre

SYDNEY, Dec 29 AAP - A huge fire has reportedly swept through parts of the detentioncentre at Port Augusta in South Australia today, leaving buildings severely damaged.

The Immigration Department said 11 detainees were taken to hospital suffering fromsmoke inhalation, the ABC reported.

The department said another 27 had been moved to other parts of the centre.

The ABC said 80 bedrooms in 17 buildings were destroyed by the blaze which startedin the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews from Port Augusta, Whyalla and Port Pirie attended the fire.

It was not known what caused the fire and an investigation by the Australian FederalPolice was underway.
