NSW: Youth tobacco free day kicks off

A youth anti-tobacco organisation says it's no wonder a quarter of Australian youngpeople have picked up the habit because cool actors are smoking in movies.

In an attempt to curb the number of young people taking up smoking, the AustralianNetwork on Young People and Tobacco has organised the first ever National Youth Tobacco-FreeDay -- being held today.

The network has targeted the film and cinema industries, pointing out research showingglamourised imagery of movie stars smoking on camera influences young people.

Network spokeswoman ANNE JONES says research shows that smoking in films is skyrocketing.

Instead of censoring films, Ms JONES is proposing Australian cinemas run free of chargea series of pre-produced anti-smoking advertisements prior to the screening.

The Australian Medical Association has echoed the calls to counter fashionable imageryof smoking movie stars.

National Youth Tobacco Free Day is part of National Youth Week that runs until April 14.
