NSW: Police reprobe suspicious death after tip off

SYDNEY, Feb 1 AAP - Detectives following a tip-off have reopened an investigation into
the suspected murder of a youth struck by a goods train in northern New South Wales 13
years ago.

The body of Mark Anthony Haines, 17, was discovered on January 16, 1988 on railway
tracks near Warral Siding, south of Tamworth.

He was last seen alive by his girlfriend on the corner of Edward and Wilburtree Streets,
Tamworth in the early hours of the same day.

Police believe Mark had spent the previous evening at two local nightclubs.

A white Holden Torana stolen from an address in Wilburtree Street was found rolled
over about two km from the scene of his death along with a number of items which were
scattered nearby.

A coronial inquest found Mark died of massive head injuries, possibly consistent with
being struck by a train, but recorded an open finding.

However, police inquiries trailed off without determining whether or not the youth
was dead before being run over.

"In light of new information received by Tamworth detectives, the case is now being
treated as a suspicious death," a police spokesman said today.

A number of people were being interviewed.
